Q: Is a wood-burning or gas fire pit better?

Wood costs less to build and gives you the crackle and the smell most people are picturing. Gas lights instantly, makes no smoke or ash, and shuts off when you head inside. Wood suits weekend gatherings. Gas suits anyone who wants a fire on a Tuesday without hauling logs.

Q: Can a fire pit be added to an existing patio?

Yes, and it’s one of the more common projects we take on. Depending on the design, we lift and reset a section of pavers around the new base, or build the feature alongside the patio and tie the two surfaces together. Matching the original material is usually possible. Where it isn’t, a deliberate contrast tends to look better than a near-match.

Q: When can a fire feature be built?

We build fire features during the growing season, roughly April through mid-December, alongside the rest of Tynic’s hardscape work. Late summer and early fall are popular because the space gets finished right as the evenings turn cool. Book a few months out if you can. The calendar fills fast once spring hits.

How much does it cost to install a fire pit?

A built-in masonry fire pit usually runs a few thousand dollars. A full outdoor fireplace with a chimney is a five-figure project. Size, material, and fuel type account for most of the gap, and gas builds add the cost of running a line. Our hardscaping cost guide breaks it down feature by feature.

Can a fire pit be added to an existing patio?

Do I need a permit for a backyard fire pit in Massachusetts or Connecticut?

Recreational fires at single-family homes generally don’t need a state permit in Massachusetts, though fire code keeps them under three feet across with flames no higher than two feet, and towns can add rules on top of that. Connecticut works much the same way, with local fire marshals setting the terms. Gas line work for a propane or natural gas feature does usually need a permit and a licensed installer. We’ll tell you what your town expects before anything gets built.
